NGC 1055 is an edge-on spiral galaxy located in the constellation Cetus that has a prominent nuclear bulge crossed by a wide, knotty, dark lane of dust and gas.
NGC 1055 is close in the sky to 3 "bright" stars, with magnitudes 7, 8, 9. These stars are "only" at about 150 light years distance, compared to the 40 Million light years from NGC 1055 and the several hundred million light years of the two small galaxies which can be seen on the bottom of the image.
